About the Broken Mask series.....
For several years I had been making human and animal masks in clay. When a number of them cracked from temperature changes outdoors or in the kiln, I put the pieces in a box and wrote them off. One spring I mentioned the problem to my sponsor Chris P, who said, “A broken mask reveals the true face beneath.” Bam! Her words gave me the idea of combining mask pieces with mirrors. Not skilled at first in cutting mirror without cracking the glass, I began to see broken glass as an essential part of the metaphor. The series evolved rapidly once I started cutting raw clay into intentional shapes and then firing them. Fascinated with mosaic techniques, I began using tile grout in different colors to establish different moods. We all wear masks to conceal and protect our true selves. Are any of these familiar?
