“I am a tall, strong, sometimes clumsy, woman. That may be why I have such an affinity for carving bears. This sculptural attachment has only grown over the years. Years ago my older daughter worked a boat trip to Alaska where she photographed dozens of bears, capturing the huge variety of their poses. Bears don’t appear to be very self-conscious — I admire that about them. While carving, I seem to enter deeply into the animal’s soul, an absorbing relief from the complexity of being human.”
